THE SMALLWOOD STORE

Historic Indian Trading
Post and Museum
Chokoloskee, Florida

Ted Smallwood and Chief Charlie Tigertail, circa 1928

Situated on the western edge of the Everglades in what is called 'Florida's Last Frontier,' this historic 1906 Indian trading post features displays of original remaining stock, machinery, furs & hides, and examples of items that the local Indians traded. The store, which remained open and active until 1982, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Recently re-opened by Smallwood's granddaughter as a museum, the store now serves as a time capsule of Florida pioneer history. The center section of the building remains as original owner Ted Smallwood would have known it, while the hide room has been turned into exhibit space; an on-site gift shop offers authentic Seminole crafts for sale.

The museum/store is located off Hwy 29 to Everglades City on Chokoloskee Island, part of Florida's 10,000 Islands chain. Open daily December 1-May 1; Friday-Tuesday, May 2-November 30.
